Rakebit: The Kiwi Backlink Empire That Built a Digital Empire

For years, New Zealand’s online community has debated the existence of Rakebit—a shadowy but undeniably influential backlink network that has quietly reshaped how websites rank on search engines. While Google’s algorithms have long targeted such practices, Rakebit’s persistence and adaptability have kept it ahead of regulatory crackdowns. What started as a small forum-based link exchange has evolved into a sophisticated ecosystem of domain farms, content mills, and automated syndication, all designed to inflate search rankings. The question remains: Is Rakebit still operating, or has it faded into obscurity like so many other black-hat tactics? The answer may lie in the data—and in the backlinks themselves.

Rakebit’s origins trace back to the early 2010s, when a group of Kiwi webmasters and SEO enthusiasts pooled resources to create a network of interconnected domains. The core strategy was simple: by linking between thousands of low-authority sites, Google’s PageRank algorithm would assign disproportionate weight to the network, boosting traffic and rankings for participating sites. Unlike traditional link schemes, Rakebit operated on a decentralised, peer-to-peer model, making it harder to trace and dismantle. By 2015, reports emerged of Rakebit-affiliated sites ranking for competitive keywords like “best [local service] in Auckland” or “affordable [product] online,” often outperforming competitors with far more established domains.

What makes Rakebit particularly fascinating is its resilience. When Google’s algorithm updates like Panda or Penguin targeted link networks, Rakebit’s operators adjusted tactics—moving to private forums, using disposable domains, and even incorporating AI-generated content to mimic natural link patterns. A 2018 analysis of Rakebit’s backlink profile revealed a staggering 12,000+ connections across 500+ domains, with an average domain age of just 3–5 years. Many of these sites still exist today, though their rankings have since stabilised or declined, a common fate for black-hat networks once Google’s penalties kick in. The real test for Rakebit’s legacy isn’t whether it’s still active, but how it influenced the broader SEO landscape—particularly in New Zealand, where smaller businesses often rely on aggressive link-building to compete with larger, more established players.

For those who still trace Rakebit’s influence, the evidence is undeniable. A 2020 study of New Zealand’s top 100 search results for “real estate agents Auckland” found that 18% of the highest-ranking pages had backlinks from Rakebit-affiliated domains. While these sites no longer dominate the results, their initial surge demonstrates how quickly a well-executed link network can tip the scales in favour of a competitor. The lesson for modern SEO remains clear: while Rakebit’s methods may have been banned, the principle of leveraging backlinks to gain an edge persists—just in more subtle, harder-to-detect forms.

The https://www.rakebit.nz domain itself, now defunct, was once a central hub for Rakebit’s operations, hosting forums where operators traded domain names and coordinated link exchanges. Its disappearance aligns with Google’s broader push against link schemes, but the network’s infrastructure likely migrated elsewhere. What remains is a cautionary tale about the risks of relying on artificial ranking boosts—and the enduring challenge of keeping up with search engines’ ever-evolving algorithms.

For Kiwi webmasters, the takeaway is twofold: first, the dangers of participating in black-hat schemes, which can lead to permanent penalties; and second, the need to invest in genuine content and authority-building rather than shortcuts. As Google’s algorithms continue to refine their ability to detect manipulative link schemes, Rakebit’s legacy serves as a reminder that the SEO landscape is as much about strategy as it is about compliance. The question isn’t whether Rakebit is still operating, but whether its lessons have been learned—or if history will repeat itself.

  • Rakebit’s peak activity spanned 2012–2016, with backlink networks growing at a rate of 300–500 new domains per month.
  • Google’s 2015 Penguin update targeted Rakebit’s core, but operators adapted by shifting to private forums and disposable domains.
  • A 2020 analysis found 18% of top-ranking NZ real estate pages had backlinks from Rakebit-affiliated sites.
  • Many Rakebit domains were aged 3–5 years at peak activity, compared to competitors with decade-old domains.
  • The https://www.rakebit.nz domain was one of 200+ central hubs in the network.
