Respected one and all,
Vazhga valamudan
Last week, while I was in England, I witnessed firsthand the respect for a dhoti in that country and how the people there are happy to recognize its cultural significance to Indians. At the same time, I saw a video on social media wherein a farmer named Fakirappa was refused entry to a commercial complex in his native city of Bangalore, India, because he was wearing a Dhoti. Seeing this, I express my feelings through this letter with a troubled mind and a heavy heart.
I want every Indian to be proud of wearing a dhoti. A dhoti or veshti is not just a dress; It is a symbol of our culture and heritage. It is a symbol of India’s unique heritage and pride. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, revolutionized the freedom movement by adopting the dhoti as a symbol of resistance and self-reliance. Gandhi’s choice of the dhoti was a powerful statement against the exploitation of Indian weavers and a call for the boycott of foreign-made goods. It became a symbol of India’s struggle for freedom and self-respect. For centuries, the dhoti or veshti has been worn by countless Indians embodying the simplicity, elegance and richness of our culture.
The incident at GT World Mall is a stark reminder of the need for greater awareness and respect for our diverse cultural practices. We urge the concerned mall authorities and similar establishments to reflect on this incident and take corrective measures to ensure that such discriminatory practices do not occur in future. Discrimination based on clothing is unacceptable and goes against the values of equality and respect that we hold dear. My deep sympathy for the weavers and the humiliation I received while wearing a dhoti are the two main reasons for the evolution of the brand RAMRAJ.
There is no shame in wearing Dhoti. This is an identity that belongs to each and every Indian.
Thank you.
